you. The situation doesn t look good for Lyask. Your father thinks the renegade officers are about to reintroduce their
presence on your planet.
Find me? Panic seized her. But how?
We don t know. But, believe it or not, you are considered the galaxy s most dangerous criminal right now. A ruse of
course, concocted to hide your assassination.
They want to kill me? To control Lyask? After agonizing over Krys wanting to leave her, she would be the one who
walked out of his life. The irony was tragic. I can t place Krys and Jaret in danger.
Those two are used to running from Command.
Dena shook her head. But this is different. If I stay with them, the entire military will be pursuing them.
You re right about that. Being around you wouldn t exactly be keeping a low profile. But as protective as they re
acting--
That doesn t matter. They ll be safer without me. And I would be safe, hiding among your people.
Yes, ShallaMai said with a smile. That is why I m here.
Dena noticed Krys storming up the road, his eyes intent upon her. The man bewildered her. He wouldn t let her out of
his sight, yet he pushed her away. Still, it saddened her to know that she would be leaving him today. Of course,
leaving was inevitable. He still didn t see their life together as something permanent.
Come with me now, ShallaMai said, insistence in her voice.
No, I must talk with him. Explain as much as I can.
ShallaMai nodded. I figured as much. I will land my Starfire on the beach outside the bungalow at sunset.
ShallaMai slunk into the crowd as Krys grabbed her harshly. Don t you ever do that again!
She pulled her arm from his grip. You don t control me.
Obviously not. He picked her up and tossed her over his shoulder.
She kicked her legs up, trying to flip over his shoulder. Let me down!
Krys did set her down but held her upper arms tightly. He took her mouth with heated force, pulling her tongue into
his mouth, urging her to return his passion.
No! She cried against him, clinging to him even as she pushed away. My whole planet looks to me for guidance,
Krys. And you won t let me out of your sight. I don t need you--
He took her mouth again, making love to her with his lips and tongue, caressing her body, holding her to him. When

she didn t respond, he pleaded with her, Will you deny your passion then? Will you deny that need?
She pushed him away. What of tomorrow? What good will come of it, if I m alone tomorrow. I need more than this. I
need to know that....
Krys held her face between his hands, gently nuzzling his lips against her neck, her lips; he even kissed the tip of her
nose and her eyelids. Sweet one, right now is all that matters.
Yes, she thought. Right now is all that matters.
If there was some way that she could know for sure that he could be loyal to her and her family, then maybe they
wouldn t have to part. If there was one thing she d learned from Jaret, it was that star pirates had to take advantage of
the situations that come their way, think on their feet. She suddenly was swept off hers.
See what I mean, she said softly. She took his face between her hands and kissed him tenderly on his lips, all the
while looking him straight in the eye. I m perfectly capable of walking, and you re going to carry me all the way back
to the bungalow, aren t you?
* * * *
Jaret was waiting at the bungalow, his muscles bunched up as if he were ready to attack. And she d thought Krys had
a temper. Images of the red dragon back on Rheno flowed through her mind. She half expected steam to pour out of
Jaret s nostrils. Can t you at least listen to me?
Dena didn t like to think of herself as weak-willed, but there was no escaping this conversation without some of the
truth. A Sarza Command ship was scouting the area--
We know that, Jaret said.
I need to leave.
No, Krys insisted. You aren t leaving.
Neither Krys nor Jaret said anything else, and they both were looking at her as if they expected the argument was over.
Simple as that! They figured they could control her.
There is something I haven t told you about my stay on Rheno.
I knew that you would, Jaret said.
Krys looked as if he wasn t convinced.
I found my father. He didn t die on Lyask the night of the first invasion. He s called for me, and I need to go to him.
Krys stood there, unresponsive, a dumbfounded expression on his face.
Jaret was shocked, but it only took him a moment to recover. We ll take you, he said. We ll take you to your
father.
It hurt that Krys had nothing to say. No, she said softly. I must go alone.
Jaret shook his head vehemently. I won t let you do that.
This isn t my decision. Now that I know my father is alive, I have to listen to him.
I will not allow you to leave Krys.

Starlit Destiny
Dena watched Krys, distraught that he remained silent. He stared at her with a blank look on his face. What does it
matter? Whether it is today, or tomorrow? It is inevitable.
Jaret frowned at her. You re daft for not recognizing that Krys loves you.
