dying people out there, forgetting there was a war going on in a
distant, godforsaken place. This was a sanctuary where nothing
could touch them.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Logan stared for a long time at the envelope, dreading
opening it. It was from the Department of National Defense
the armed forces. She was done with them, her contract having
expired months ago. She d done her four years, plus a few months
to help train other doctors heading out on a tour. She was free to
go, thanked for her services with a medal for serving two tours in
Afghanistan. She was back in civilian life and happy to be there.
Wasn t she?
When she could no longer stand the suspense, she tore open
the envelope. She needed to know what they wanted with her.
She scanned it quickly, then read it again more slowly. They
were lean on doctors as always and wanted her to rejoin the
Regular Forces for a six-month tour, to be done again at KAF.
They would give her a nice bonus if she did so and possibly
another promotion. Logan carefully folded the letter and set it
down on her desk. She would ignore it. That s what she d do.
They d get the hint when they didn t hear back from her. Or

they d keep bugging her, knowing them, in which case she would
flat out tell them no.
Logan got ready for work another night shift and let her
mind drift to Jillian. Only two more nights and they would be
together again, this time at Logan s place because it would be
Maddie s weekend away. Logan liked numbers. It was exactly
thirteen days since she and Jillian had first made love, not that
she was counting or anything. She couldn t wait until she saw
Jillian again, which at this rate was about every five days. They
were both busy, and while it wasn t enough, it would have to do
for now.
Logan had just finished putting on her scrubs in the doctor s
lounge when her cell phone rang. The number came up unknown,
but she picked up anyway, in case it was Jillian.
 Sharp here.
Hey, Logan. It s Meg! How are you?
Jesus, Atwood, is that you? Logan reeled in surprise. It d
been months since she d heard from Meg, and that had been an
e-mail, not a phone call.
Meg chuckled on the other end. Yeah, it s me. Did I catch
you at a bad time?
Logan glanced at her watch. I start my shift in four
minutes.
All right, I ll make it snappy, Major.
 Just plain old Logan now.
I know, I know. Listen, I m going to be in town tomorrow.
Meet me for a drink?
Sure, I d love to, but what the hell are you doing in
Windsor?
I have to be in Sarnia in a couple of days to do some recruiting
PR crap. Thought I d divert down to Windsor for a night and see
you. Are you off tomorrow night by chance?
Fortunately, yes. How about dinner and a drink?
 Perfect. Just tell me where.
Logan gave her the name of a restaurant on Riverside Drive
and promised to meet her at six thirty.
216
Will I recognize you out of uniform or out of your scrubs?
Logan teased.
Yeah, I ll be the one in stilettos and the revealing dress.
That I would pay to see! Meg dressing that way was about
as unlikely as Logan doing so, but the vision did give her a few
minutes of entertainment.
Meg gave her a long, exuberant hug at the restaurant.
God, it s good to see you, Logan. Did you miss me?
Logan beamed at her friend, who, she was happy to note, was
not wearing stilettos and a revealing dress. Just khaki pants and a
blue polo shirt. The world was not ready for Meg to be all girled
up. Yeah, I did. It s great to see you. You look good, Meg. She
looked happy, fit. Like she hadn t a care in the world, which was
so typical of Meg.
My God, Logan, you look for once like you don t have
the weight of the world on your shoulders. Something or
someone is treating you right. She winked for effect, but
Logan ignored the bait.
They took their seats beside floor-to-ceiling windows that
looked across the river and the Detroit skyline. The scene was so
familiar to Logan that she barely noticed now.
 Great view, Meg enthused.
Haven t you been to Windsor before?
Once or twice when I was a kid, that s all.
Looking forward to your recruiting duties tomorrow?
Meg rolled her eyes. Not exactly, but it beats sitting at my
base treating colds or torn MCLs all day long.
Logan knew what that was like. At home, base life was
pretty boring, and at least this road trip was getting Meg off
the base, doing something different, meeting people. With her [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
